| We
supply to individuals and trade, expert and novice. Our history
so far has had more of a leaning towards catering for the amateur
woodworker or home improver, as well as small professional furniture
making and craft businesses.
Standard
thicknesses are 1” / 25mm, 1.25” / 32mm, 1.5”
/ 38mm, 2” / 50mm, 2.5” / 63mm, 3” / 75mm, 4”
/ 100mm. We saw generously so usually the boards will be 1-3mm oversize,
but measured at the standard size.
Standard
lengths are 5ft / 1.5m, 6ft / 1.8m, 7ft / 2.1m, 8ft / 2.4m, 10ft
/ 3.0m, 12ft / 3.6m.
There
are no standard widths in the UK hardwood industry. Our boards are
anything from 3”/ 75mm up to 24”/600mm, with very occasional boards
up to 48”/1200mm.
These
may sometimes exhibit water marks and weathering on the faces which
will generally only go down 1mm or so, but occasionally 3 to 4mm
will need to be removed to clean up the surface properly. In any
case you will generally need to plane 3 to 4 mm off the original
thickness in order to straighten the boards, depending on board
width & length, unless it is a very rustic project in which
case sanding only may be sufficient.
Pricing
: these boards are rarely pre-priced, so will be measured and priced
as you are selecting. Patrick will help with handling and choosing
boards if required.
Dressed Boards
click here to see Dressed Boards Stock page
A
constant selection of ‘planed’ or ‘dressed’
boards is kept in the timber store.
These have been planed 1 face and then thicknessed so both faces
are parallel and dressed. The edges are left off saw or waney. The
boards are presented for easy SELF SELECTION.
These
boards are all pre-priced with labels showing the species, thickness
of the board, provenance (read more about provenance in About
Us) and price including vat.
Patrick
can plane boards to order selected from the Sawn boards stock, sometimes
while you wait but more usually with about a 7 day turn around.
The
thicknesses will generally be at least 0.25" / 6mm less than
the standard sawn board sizes listed above.
The
widths will be maximum 24"/600mm as that is the max that goes through
our planer.
Board types
| |

a) WE : with waney edges (ie with the bark still on both edges).
|

b) SE : square edged (2 edges sawn straight before drying which
will have moved slightly in the drying process & no longer

Squares,
Branchwood, Burrs & Blanks
Squared
timber is supplied usually in lengths up to 30” / 750mm for
table legs or woodturning.
Branchwood
is supplied for furniture uses or woodturning, usually in Yew, Laburnum,
Cherry and Boxwood. See ‘stock’ for current supplies.
Burrs
are stocked in rough lumps and slices, mostly Elm, sometimes Oak
or Lime.
A
very limited range of woodturning blanks is sometimes offered or
at least some offcuts from boards from which you can cut your own
disc blanks.
Whacky
Shapes
Unusual,
wild and whacky shaped boards are a bit of a speciality. You can
hang them on the wall or choose to make something out of them such
as tea light mounts on the wall, signage or clocks. You are only
limited by your imagination!
Beams
A selection of beams for structural building work or over-mantels
for fireplaces are usually available in Oak and various softwoods.
These are either Green (fresh sawn & wet) or Partially Seasoned,
so some shrinking and cracking will occur. Give us your sizes and
we will see whether we have anything in stock to suit.
